On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the event Kickstart for the Insect Sector took place in North Limburg, organized by Start Insect. Start Insect builds on the foundation of Insect Valley Europe, which has now evolved into this new initiative. This hands-on innovation platform brings together companies, investors, researchers, and public partners to accelerate insect farming in the Netherlands and contribute to a circular food system.
The launch event gave visitors the opportunity to meet the initiators, explore collaboration opportunities, and discover new market potential within the insect sector. The program featured inspiring presentations, meetings with frontrunners in the industry, and sessions on current themes such as valorization of side streams, sustainable protein production, and scaling up innovative technologies.
Participants were able to learn more about the role of insects in regional and national food supply, connect with leading companies and solution providers, and network with stakeholders across the entire value chain. This setup not only facilitated knowledge exchange but also laid the groundwork for new collaborations that will help the sector move forward.
A key moment of the day was the signing of a cooperation agreement by sector partners. This formalized the joint ambition to accelerate innovation and further strengthen the position of the insect sector in the Netherlands.
Link with IPPEC
The Start Insect initiative aligns seamlessly with the ambitions of the Insect Protein Production Expertise Center (IPPEC). Both focus on collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation to make insect farming scalable, profitable, and sustainable. While Start Insect focuses on connecting regional stakeholders and creating new market opportunities, IPPEC offers an international hub with living labs, an insect learning community, and research and innovation projects.
The cross-pollination between Start Insect and IPPEC strengthens the entire sector: companies and researchers involved in Start Insect gain access to international knowledge and practical testing through IPPEC, while IPPEC benefits from the strong regional anchoring and network power of Start Insect. Together, these initiatives lay the foundation for a circular insect value chain that will not only advance the Netherlands but also Europe and the world.
